The Interns’ Note 2021: Language is Multidisciplinary

On 22 and 26 November 2021, Asst. Prof Dr. Udomsak Saegnow, the director of Research Institute for Health Sciences (RIHS), warmly welcomed Asst. Prof. Dr. Wararat Wanchit, an English program instructor visiting her intern advisees at RIHS. This year the interns are distributed to both the general administration and the laboratory division, resulting in them facing different challenges.

The intern at the administration division is responsible for public relations, normally in media, such as designing banners, writing bilingual news and translating legal documents including the grant application, budget manual, awards dissemination, and Ethics announcements. Meanwhile, the other intern at the laboratory division translates documents relating to research standards such as OECD, ISO, and etc. In addition to translation tasks, Warapiang also compiles and updates information regarding lab animal, laboratory facilities and services to publish them on RIHS’ English version website.

“We, the interns, had reported our progress of the completed assignments together with our cooperative education projects. Even though the work was quite unfamiliar to us, we eventually managed to complete those tough tasks thanks to RIHS staff who let us take our time to learn along with giving kind advice. So far, we have applied the multi-skills, including, digital, design, interpretation and communication skills in both tasks and the projects we’re working on. On top of that, working in this [Science] field also considerably expanded my knowledge,” said Wanwipa Warapiang.

“In my view, I realized that English is not the stand-alone subject. Language is naturally multidisciplinary, which requires contexts to understand something. For example, when you want to understand culture, you have to integrate it with history, political science, or even law. If you want to understand your health, you have you integrate it with science. We can’t read, write, speak, or listen comprehensibly without the background context,” said Sudarat Jettana.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Wararat Wanchit also agreed with the interns after receiving the feedback from RIHS staff that the multi-functional interns are highly demanded. She offered her new viewpoint of internship that it was not about what you have done. It was about what you can do.
