April 8, 2021, the Histopathology Laboratory of the Health Science Research Building received laboratory assessments and certification in a peer evaluation: phase 1 at the Moklan Room, Administration Building. Prof.Dr. Wanna Churit, Vice President for Research and Social Service, Asst.Prof.Dr. Udomsak Saengow, the director of the Research Institute for Health Science and staff welcomed experts and qualified laboratory safety auditors from the Center for Occupational Safety, Health and Workplace Environments Management (COSHEM), Mahidol University on behalf of the project secretary to raise safety standards for research laboratories in Thailand (ESPRel) by the mission of the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT).
The National Research Office has recognized the significance of safety, therefore promoted and supported the establishment of various standards and practices, in conjunction with safety operations, to develop research that is of high quality and internationally accepted. Hence, Mahidol University establishes a system of laboratory assessment and certification in the form of peer evaluation, using the ESPReL Checklist as a tool to assess laboratory safety conditions in conjunction with laboratory assessment and certification by laboratory safety experts, in order for domestic laboratories to develop a more efficient and effective safety management system.
And in August, the Center for Occupational Safety, Health and Workplace Environments Management, Mahidol University, submitted a peer evaluation of the lab’s results, with the institute receiving a perfect 100 score with seven aspects. The evaluation team has made recommendations for further improvements to the laboratory as well as the construction of other laboratories to achieve the same high standards. All laboratories in the Health Science Research Building will be sent, according to the institute’s plans. In the future years, take part in safety inspections.
Advantages of Auditing
- Researchers: There is a specialized place for studying, researching, and conducting research with nationally and internationally recognized standards. It encourages the publication of works in a standardized and convenient manner. Moreover, it also increases trust in journals and funding sources.
- University: It increases the laboratory safety cooperation network at domestic and abroad to participate in propelling the development of concrete safety laboratories that meet national and international standards.
- Country: It fosters a long-term culture of laboratory safety, promotes development toward international laboratory safety standards, and boosts the international competitiveness of research, academics, and innovation.
